Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra with special guest, baritone saxophonist Frank Basile at the Historic Bohemian Caverns

02.20.12 |8pm and 945pm

Washington, DC

Frank Basile is quickly becoming one of New York’s busiest and most in-demand baritone saxophonists. Since moving to New York in 2001, Basile has been heard with The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, The Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band, The Jimmy Heath Big Band, The Dave Holland Big Band, The Joe Lovano Nonet, Michael Bublé, The Christian McBride Big Band, Pablo Mayor’s Folklore Urbano, The Richie Vitale Quintet, The Chris Byars Octet, The Bob Mintzer Big Band, The Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, Dennis Mackrell's Manhattan Symphony Jazz Orchestra, and The Jason Lindner Ensemble, among others.

Born in Illinois in 1978 and raised in Nebraska, Frank Basile began his musical studies in grade school. After four years on clarinet and alto saxophone, he made a permanent switch to the baritone saxophone. Once in high school, Basile’s interest in jazz began to grow and, with the help and encouragement of his parents, he sought out further instruction on the ins and outs of this great music. Basile was soon playing in numerous big bands and combos throughout the Omaha area. His senior year in high school, he won the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra’s first annual Young Artist Competition.

Basile decided to continue studying music in college, and he enrolled at the University of North Texas. While at UNT, Basile played in the world-renowned One O’clock Lab Band for six consecutive semesters. In the 1999-2000 school year, Basile was named UNT’s Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Jazz Studies. Basile was also a recipient of a Downbeat Student Music Award in 2001 in the Jazz Instrumentalist category.

After graduating with honors and a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from UNT, Basile moved to New York in the summer of 2001 as a selected member of the first Jazz Studies program at the Juilliard School.

When not appearing as a sideman, Basile can be heard with his quintet, which performs regularly throughout the city.

At the age of 18, Yotam served his country by joining the Israeli army where he served as a musical director, arranger and lead guitarist for 3 years. During this time, he garnered further recognition and began playing with many of Israel’s top jazz musicians. At 21, he won the prestigious Israeli Jazz Player of the Year competition with his trio, and was invited to perform in Italy at the Umbria Jazz Festival.

In August of 2005, Yotam received a scholarship to study jazz and contemporary music at the New School in New York City. A month later, he was selected as one of 10 top guitar players to participate in the semi-finals of the Thelonious Monk Institute’s celebrated competition.

Now a resident of New York City, Yotam is a regular on the jazz scene, and is performing around the globe with such greats as Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Louis Hayes, Jimmy Heath, Frank Wess, Al Jerreau, Paquito D'Rivera, Monty Alexander, Dee Dee Bridgewater, James Spaulding, Roy Hargrove, Pat Martino, Greg Hutchinson, Antonio Hart, Slide Hampton, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars—and the late James Moody, who was an early advocate, friend and mentor.

In 2010, Yotam was signed by Jazz Legacy Productions to record his most recent CD, Resonance, with Aaron Goldberg, Christian McBride, Greg Hutchinson and Roy Hargrove. The album reached #3 on the JazzWeek charts and #1 on the Music Choice chart.

The BCJO plays the Music and Arrangements of Eyal Vilner with vocalist Yaala Ballin

04.04.11 |8pm and 945pm

Washington, DC

Saxophone player, Composer and Arranger, Eyal Vilner, lives in New York and collaborates with some of the finest upcoming musicians of the city's Jazz scene. The orchestra performs new arrangements of Jazz classics by composers such as: Irvin Berlin, Cole Porter, Kern & Hammerstein and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as Vilner’s Originals.
After touring Israel in the summer of 2008, Mr. Vilner decided it’s time to create a New York version of his Israeli all star big band. He gathered fourteen of New York City's finest young professional musicians representing four countries and three continents.
For the past two years Eyal Vilner Big Band has been performing at New York’s prestigious Jazz Clubs such as Sweet Rhythm, Fat Cat and a steady engagement at Smalls Jazz Club.
During the Month of December 2009 the Eyal Vilner Big Band featured world renowned jazz legends- Mr. Junior Mance and Mr. Jimmy Owens.

“Eyal’s writing has daring and wit- much of it deeply in the tradition, some questioning toward a convincing contemporary edge” -composer and arranger Kirk Nurock.

Yaala Ballin, vocalist, was born in Israel and moved to New York in 2004. In addition to frequent performances in the city's prestigious jazz venues including Smalls, Smoke and Birdland, she has also toured in Europe and the former Soviet Union, and has been a featured artist in international jazz festivals in Israel.
